Computer Short List

  1.  Do not boot down your computer until Friday afternoon (or last day before a vacation.)
  2. Do NOT ever use screen savers. Turn off your monitor when your computer is not in use and before leaving school each day.
  3. Clear the contents of your C:\Windows\Temp directory frequentlyespecially if you are having printer problems. If you can not delete a file, use ctrl-alt-del and “end task” until you can delete all files from that folder. Only “explorer” can not be ended.
  4. Backup, backup, backup!  Backup all personal files on a virus-protected computer that is not located in the same building where you are located. I will need a unique folder name (usually your name) and a password.
  5. Use Scan Disk and Defrag at least once a month. I do it once a week.  Do it even if your computer says it is not needed. Use ctrl-alt-del to end all tasks except for “explorer” before performing these operations.
  6. Place all requests to me by sending a cvc lan email to “Bill Drennon”.  Use the red “!” if it is an emergency. Please be patient.
  7. Do not download any email attachments unless they pertain to school/classroom business, your are expecting them, and your computer is updated with the latest virus protection.
  8. Print most of your copies directly to your designated digital copy machine. If you require color copies, print via network to the HP LaserJet 4600dn nearest to your location. They should both be setup on your computer.
  9. Please become involved with our website. All I need is a username, a password (min 6 characters), for http://home.cvc.org/username. You need  WinSCP.
  10.  Please obtain a cvc.org email address (or 2 if you want a personal one for home) so that you can receive spam and virus pre-scanned email. I will need a username and a password (min 6 char) for username@cvc.org.
  11.  Before opening any files created at home, check them for viruses!  Save them in a C:\downloads folder. It can then be checked by your backup computer, myself, or other designated assistant. (More on that later.)
  12. Save and transfer all documents in rich text format (.rtf)
  13. Students are not to load floppies or CDs unless you are positive that they have been checked to be virus free.
  14. Students are not to use your computer un-chaperoned.
  15. Students are not to use your computer unless they have signed the CVC AUP.  (acceptable use policy) Have student print last page off of website and parents and student sign… or print out a copy for them. Homeroom teacher will collect these and let Mrs. Koelewyn know who has and has not returned them.
  16. Read, learn, and sign the FUP.
  17. If a networked program “doesn’t work”, learn how to tell if it is a mapping problem, a network problem, or a net-congesting problem.
  18. If you are an old hand with a computer and our network, please help the new teachers and other colleagues with problems.
